A while ago, I found an image online of a guy cycling a city-style bike into a canal. I became slightly obsessed with this image, mainly wondering if it was intentional or just a lucky photo. I was surprised to find it was a screen grab from a video piece by Bas Jan Ader.
30 years ago, he took what appeared to have been the smallest sail boat he could find to cross the Atlantic ocean, he was never seen again.
He left behind an incredible selection of video work, very experimental, shot on 16mm. Its not everyone’s cup of tea but has seemed to find a special place with me.
A selection of his work can be viewed on his magnificent site - truly weird, wonderful and beautiful.
